Summer Skin Care Tips

Summer is here, and it's time to get your skin care routine in check. The summer sun can be harsh on your skin, causing sunburn, premature aging, and even skin cancer. The best way to protect your skin is to use sunscreen, but there are other steps you can take to keep your skin healthy and glowing throughout the season.

SPF Facts:

Before we dive into the summer skin care tips, let's talk about SPF. SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor, and it measures how well a sunscreen can protect your skin from UVB rays, which are the rays that cause sunburn. The higher the SPF, the better the protection. However, it's important to remember that no sunscreen can block 100% of UVB rays, so it's still possible to get sunburned even if you're wearing sunscreen.

Here are a few more SPF facts to keep in mind:

  • SPF 30 blocks about 97% of UVB rays, while SPF 50 blocks about 98%.

  • It's recommended to use a sunscreen with at least SPF 30.

  • You should apply sunscreen at least 15 minutes before going outside, and reapply every two hours (more often if you're swimming or sweating).

  • Sunscreen should be used every day, even on cloudy or overcast days, as UV rays can still penetrate clouds.

Summer Skin Care Tips:

Now that we know a bit more about SPF, let's talk about some other summer skin care tips to keep your skin healthy and glowing all season long:

  1. Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of water is essential for healthy skin. In the summer, it's especially important to stay hydrated as the heat can cause you to sweat more and lose fluids. Aim to drink at least eight glasses of water a day.

  2. Wear a Hat: Hats not only look stylish, but they also provide extra protection for your face and scalp. Look for hats with a wide brim that can shade your face and neck from the sun's rays.

  3. Avoid Peak Sun Hours: The sun's rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., so it's best to avoid spending extended periods of time outdoors during these hours. If you must be outside, seek shade whenever possible.

  4. Moisturize: Even if your skin tends to be oily in the summer, it still needs moisture. Look for a lightweight, oil-free moisturizer that won't clog your pores.

  5. Exfoliate: Exfoliating can help remove dead skin cells and keep your skin looking fresh and healthy. However, be careful not to overdo it, as too much exfoliation can irritate your skin. Aim to exfoliate once a week.

  6. Use a Gentle Cleanser: Summer heat and sweat can lead to clogged pores, so it's important to use a gentle cleanser to remove dirt and oil. Look for a cleanser that's formulated for your skin type.

  7. Don't Forget Your Lips: Your lips can also get sunburned, so make sure to use a lip balm with SPF. Look for a balm with at least SPF 15.

  8. Protect Your Eyes: Sunglasses not only look cool, but they also protect your eyes from UV rays. Look for sunglasses that block 99-100% of both UVA and UVB rays.

  9. Reapply Sunscreen: As mentioned earlier, it's important to reapply sunscreen every two hours (more often if you're swimming or sweating). Don't forget to apply sunscreen to all exposed skin, including your ears, neck, and hands.

  10. Take Care of Your Hair: The sun can also damage your hair, so it's important to protect it. Wear a hat or use a sun visor!

It's important that during the summer we are taking extra care of our skin. Lots of hydrating facial services are always going to keep your skin supple and moisturized as well as keeping up with your at home skin care regimen. Don't forget to drink PLENTY of water!
